Top Ten Reasons Why You Can’t Miss The Jammer!

by Greg Copeland, unbiased producer

i. It’s a high-energy, fast-paced, theatrically stylized comic romp about Roller Derby that manages to have a heart of gold and wring a tear from your eye.
ii. Roller Derby! Action! Sexy babes! Sexy babes in hot Roller Derby action!
iii. It’s quite possibly the only show to have its American and European debuts in the same month at both the New York International Fringe Festival – FringeNYC and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland.
iv. The playwright is damn good and a rising star on the American theatre scene. Rolin Jones is the winner of the American Theater Critics Association’s 2004 Elizabeth Osborne Award for an Emerging Playwright. His play The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow has been produced at South Coast Rep, The Old Globe, Studio Theatre in DC, will play Yale Rep this October, perhaps London later and was a finalist for the Steinberg New Play Award. And it’s not even about Roller Derby!
v. The roller coaster scene. Jack it up!
vi. The cast is so good that one of our stars understudied P. Diddy in Broadway’s A Raisin in the Sun (and got better notices than the rapper/mogul-turned-thespian when he went on for him). Another has won an Emmy Award while a graduate student and a third was nominated for a Drama Desk Award her first year out of graduate school. Billy Eugene Jones, Peter Macon, and Jeanine Serralles (not to mention the comedic genius of Kevin Rich in the title role) are stars in the making, people. The whole cast is off the hook!
vii. You can’t find more fun packed into 80 short minutes that’s legal. And air conditioned. And that has nothing to do with the RNC.
viii. Our stage manager, Grace O’Brien. I mean, really people. The show is impeccably stage managed, and that shouldn’t be missed.
ix. You might meet one of the hot hot hot riot girls of the Gotham Girls Roller Derby. No really. They’re fans of the show and down for all things Derby, naughty or nice. Check ‘em out at www.gothamgirlsrollerderby.com <http://www.gothamgirlsrollerderby.com/> . Love ya L’il Red Terror!
x. It’s the King Lear of Roller Derby plays. Duh.

That’s it, a fair and balanced look at why you can’t miss this show. Oh shit! I didn’t mention the designers! Well, throwing geniuses like Anne Kenney, Sandra Goldmark, Scott Bolman and Daniel Baker in the mix wouldn’t keep it fair and balanced. That would practically be like mandating your attendance through the Patriot Act, rounding you all up and detaining you in the Guantanamo of Players Upstairs 3C. Wait, that’s not a bad idea…I’ve got to have Ashcroft’s number around here somewhere…
